Ernesto Gentili - ANTEPRIME TOSCANE 2023, Nobile di Montepulciano - Report WR

In keeping with a well-established tradition, the reporting of preview tastings of Nobile di Montepulciano is conditioned by the slow pace of evolution of the type and, consequently, the wines at this time are still awkward and lack the ideal set-up. It is therefore to be taken almost for granted that a good part of the current evaluations can be, already in a few months, revised upward. On the stylistic level, on the other hand, the tasting has not offered any different indications from the past, i.e., various trends continue to coexist that at this stage, partly for the reasons mentioned above, seem even more distant from each other. It is likely that a sharper definition may be noticed ( starting next year) with the concrete introduction of the "Pievi" project - the definition coined in Montepulciano to define the 12 UGAs (additional geographical units) of Nobile - which should raise the level of interest and attraction around the appellation and consequently trigger a natural process of qualitative and stylistic growth.

Returning to this year's tastings (carried out with the collaboration of Claudio Corrieri), aimed basically at the 2020 and 2019 vintages, I must mention that some of the most reputable selections of the type were absent, such as Asinone and Le Caggiole by Poliziano, Nocio by Boscarelli, Simposio by Tenuta Trerose and others. Despite these absences and taking into account the initial premises, there was no shortage of gratifying reasons, however; among all the 47 wines reviewed, the I Quadri 2020 selection from the Bindella winery stood out authoritatively, and, just not to mention the usual well-knowns, the Nobile 2019 from the Guidotti winery and the Riserva 2019 La Poiana from Il Mulinaccio deserve a mention.
